The first regular production Mustang, Job 1, a Wimbeldon White 260ci V8 convertible, rolled off the assembly line on March 9, 1964 one month prior to the 1964 Mustang launch. But the publicity tour of serial number 5F08F100001 ended earlier than the Ford marketing team had planned. Three days prior to the official April 17 World's Fair introduction date, while on display at a St. John's Newfoundland Ford dealership following it's Canadian tour, the first Mustang Job 1 was inadvertently sold.

Stanley Tucker, an airline captain, had seen the car at his local Ford dealership. Captain Tucker was not aware that the Mustang was the first one produced, but he did know he wanted to own it. It wasn't too long after he took possession that his phone began to ring. Despite pleas from Ford bent on acquiring the car back, Stanley clung to the Mustang and drove it 10,000 miles during the next two years.

After two years of ownership Captain Tucker did agree to surrender the car in exchange for a new 1966 Mustang. In May of 1966 Captain Tucker presented the first Mustang to Henry Ford II. In return Captain Tucker received the Millionth Mustang manufactured, a 1966 convertible with every production option, except for the High Performance 271 HP engine. Captain Tucker sold and parted with the 1966 Millionth Mustang, all used up and rusted in 1972.

The first Mustang was exhibited by Ford for several months after its return. It was then donated by the company to the Henry Ford Museum in Dearborn Michigan and put into long term storage. In 1974 it was briefly displayed in honor of the Mustang's tenth anniversary. Finally in the late eighties the first Mustang was taken out of storage, permanently retired and displayed with several hundred other automotive exhibits at the Henry Ford Museum.

At least the original Mustang is still around to remind us of how the "Pony Car" phenomenon began almost 40 years ago. The first Mustang Job 1, can be seen & appreciated today in the Showroom of Automotive History Section of the Henry Ford Museum. Unrestored with 10,000 original miles, thanks to Captain Stanley Tucker.
