The running prototype to the production Mustang was developed and shown in late 1963, the Mustang II concept is displayed at the U.S. Grand Prix. Its long hood, short rear deck, sculptured sides, 108-inch wheelbase, front engine-rear wheel drive, four seat capacity and various design cues, such as rear quarter panel scoops, tri-bar taillights, and grille design are directly incorporated into the production Mustang released to the public in the Spring of 1964.

This milestone vehicle is alive and well preserved! Ford retired the concept car in 1964 and had plans to destroy it. Ford's R&D drive train department needed a test mule, so it was spared from the crusher. In 1975 Ford Motor Company donated the Mustang II to the Detroit Historical Society, it was put into storage where it remained until 1996. At that time the Mustang II was loaned to the Owl's Head Transportation Museum in Owl's Head, Maine www.ohtm.org where it can be seen, appreciated and enjoyed by the visiting public.
