Line drawing of the early Mustang unibody.  MCCM specializes in the repair and replacement of rusted structural components such as the frame, floors and cowl vent areas.

ORIGINAL CONSTRUCTION

The 1965-1973 Mustang Coupe/Fastback was constructed as an integrated, continuously welded "ladder-type" platform, (1968 and up also had LH & RH front torque boxes), with a box design front engine compartment, boxed LH & RH front frame extensions, boxed front cross member, vertically reinforced inner LH & RH rockers, full-depth full-length "backbone" center tunnel, and boxed LH & RH rear frame rails, and a single plane rear cross member.

Convertible models had additional bracing to compensate for the lack of a solid steel roof, LH & RH front torque boxes, LH & RH lower seat reinforcements, one piece upper seat risers, lateral boxed LH & RH inner rocker frame rails with door post gussets, a fortified rear partition, and a reinforced dual plane rear cross member.

Body specifications of the 1965-1970 Mustang frame and under body platform. The measurements provided are used to ensure that the Mustang unibody is square, and the body mounting points are in the correct relative position to the under carriage and frame support members. We have received numerous requests for copies of the Mustang underbody measured drawing. It is available in an enlarged 11" X 17" clean clear format. If this drawing can assist your restoration project, you can obtain a copy by sending a $7.50 fee through www.paypal.com to midcomustang@att.net, be sure to mention what year Mustang you are working on.

MATERIALS

All of the sheet metal panels & frame components utilized in our frame/floor reconstruction process is cold rolled, full hard, machine steel, containing between 05% to 20% pure carbon. The panels, supports, members, and reinforcements are stamped, fabricated and embossed with original marking/ribbing and are of the proper gauge/thickness for the specific frame/floor application. Some of the sub-frame components are custom made to MCCM's exact specifications to ensure proper fit, alignment and original appearance.

METHODOLOGY

We employ the "fusion" method of metal welding. This process uses heat, generated by high voltage electricity, to partially melt the two metal surfaces to be joined. The specific type of fusion utilized is MIG (metal inert gas). During the welding process the welding equipment introduces a mixture of carbon dioxide and argon gas. The gas mix is used to displace the oxygen that forms around the weld area, if not removed oxygen would weaken and compromise the weld. When the seam of melted metal cools and hardens, the two pieces being joined are connected by a joint that is as strong as the original metal.

RECONSTRUCTION

Rusted panels, supports and frame members are carefully removed using an air drill, air chisel, high speed abrasive wheels and a cutting torch. Prior to the new replacement panels/supports being MIG welded to the existing solid frame/floor structure, careful measurements are taken to ensure the component parts are in the proper location and will provide the correct relative alignment. All exterior and inner surfaces are then treated with a cold galvanizing compound (a protective layer of zinc) and a liquid rubberized undercoating to resist future corrosion and weakening. Joints and seamed surfaces also receive a full treatment of caulking or sealant. At no time are pop rivets, screw anchors or adhesives used in our reconstruction process.
